Heart Health Benefits of Italian Seasoning Blend

Italian seasoning is low in calories and a delicious way to add a little extra fiber and a ton of antioxidants and other bioactives to your recipes! This blend of herbs can have antioxidant, anti inflammatory, blood vessel relaxing, and lipid modifying effects (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

Macronutrients

Herbs and spices, like this Italian seasoning blend, are low in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in protein. This blend is, however, a good source of fiber, and low in total sugar (no added sugar).

Micronutrients and Bioactive Components

We leave salt out of this blend, so it's low sodium. Salt really isn't needed.

The herb blend is an excellent source of vitamin K, which is important for blood clotting and other functions. Read more about vitamin K and heart health, especially if you are taking blood thinners.

As mentioned above, the biggest benefit to adding herbs and spices to foods comes in their bioactive components. Here are the prominent bioactives in Italian herb blend:

  • Rosmarinic acid - (in basil, rosemary, oregano, and marjoram) polyphenol with powerful antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-aging effects (7);
  • Eugenol - (in basil) phenolic compound with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, and antimicrobial effects (8);
  • Carnosic acid and carnosol - (in rosemary) phenols that protect lipids from oxidation (9);
  • Thymol - (in thyme, oregano, and summer savory) phenol, and isomer of carvacrol, it shows antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic activities (10, 11); and
  • Carvacrol - (in thyme, oregano, and summer savory) phenolic compound with extremely high antimicrobial activity, particularly effective against food-borne pathogens (12, 10).

Ingredients

Here is what you'll need for this recipe for Italian seasoning.

Ingredients for Italian seasoning.
  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Marjoram
  • Thyme
  • Summer savory - optional but highly recommended. It's flavor is peppery and piney, and it goes well with the other herbs here.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

Herb blends are easy measure-and-mix recipes. Here's what that looks like:

Small amount of rosemary in the palm of a hand to show crushed size.
  1. Step 1: Crush the rosemary as much as you can, using your thumb and the palm of your hand.
Individual herbs added to a bowl, before mixing.
  1. Step 2: Measure all the herbs into a bowl.
All the herbs mixed together in a bowl.
  1. Step 3: Mix all the ingredients together, and store in an airtight container.

Hint: always give your herbs and spices a little sniff when you open the jar. If you can't smell anything, it's time to toss and replace them.

Variations

Every Italian seasoning blend is just a little different. If you are out of a certain herb, or don't like one of the ingredients, just leave it out and/or add a little more of another.

Small jar of Italian seasoning.

Equipment

You need measuring spoons and a little bowl to mix in.

If you would like some cute little spice jars, try these ones.

Storage

Store Italian seasoning blend in an airtight glass jar in your pantry for up to 6 months. If you can't smell the seasoning anymore, it's time to replace it.

Healthy heart pro tip

While herbs and spices pack a nutritional punch, unless under the direction of a doctor, it's important to use them in normal, culinary amounts, and not in supplement or essential oil form. Some concentrated herb essential oils have been deemed toxic at high doses, and caution is advised (13). Additionally, some herbs may interact with warfarin (talk to your doctor).
