Who doesn't love a good ranch flavored... anything?! But ranch seasoning is usually high in sodium. Not here! Our seasoning takes it easy on the salt, while amping up the flavor with herbs and spices.

Try it sprinkled on homemade popcorn, or in other recipes like hummus, or simply mixed in some nonfat Greek yogurt (or vegan option) for a delicious veggie dip!

Heart Health Benefits of Healthy Ranch Seasoning

Ranch seasoning is low in calories and a delicious way to add a ton of antioxidants and other bioactives to your recipes! Ingredients in this blend have been studied for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cholesterol lowering, and anti-platelet effects (1, 2, 3).

Macronutrients

Herb and spice blends like this one, are often low in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in protein. This blend does, however, contribute some fiber, and is low in total sugar (no added sugar). Notably, this ranch seasoning contains no saturated fat, which is a known contributor to high cholesterol.

Micronutrients and Bioactive Components

Probably the biggest benefit to adding herbs and spices to foods (besides flavor of course!) comes in their bioactive components. Here are the prominent bioactives in low sodium ranch seasoning:

  • Allicin - (in garlic, chives, and onion) organosulfur compound that, along with other garlic compounds, boasts antioxidant and antiplatelet effects. It may also improve oxidative stress and lower blood lipids (1, 4);
  • Flavonoids and polyphenols - (in parsley, chives, and onion) group of antioxidants and anti inflammatory agents that work together to lower cardiovascular risk (2, 5, 6);
  • Beta glucans - (in nutritional yeast) a type of polysaccharide in some plant cell walls that has been shown to both lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar control (7, 8); and
  • Carotenoids - (in parsley) a group of plant pigments that can help improve cardiovascular risk factors and increase circulating antioxidants (9).

Ingredients

Here is what you'll need to make this vegan ranch seasoning, along with some applicable substitutions and notes.

Ingredients for ranch seasoning.
  • Dried parsley
  • Dried chives
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Nutritional yeast - this is where the cheesy flavor comes from, so don't leave this out! You could use buttermilk powder to substitute if you prefer and don't need it to be vegan.
  • Dried dill
  • Dried summer savory - or substitute ground pepper
  • Salt (optional - not pictured)

See recipe card for quantities.

  1. Step 4: Grind the mixture to a fine powder, and store in an airtight container.

Hint: always give your herbs and spices a little sniff when you open the jar. If you can't smell anything, it's time to toss and replace them.

Variations

Ranch seasoning is easily customizable for your taste. Experiment with different proportions of ingredients to find your perfect mix. Or try one of these variations:

  • Zesty ranch - add ground pepper or red pepper flakes and a little extra garlic for an extra kick
  • Taco ranch - add some taco seasoning to your blend
  • Smoky ranch - add some smoked paprika for a mellow, smoky touch

Equipment

You will need measuring spoons and a little bowl to mix in. Also have a coffee grinder or spice grinder.

Try these cute little spice jars if you need a storage option!

Storage

Store low sodium ranch seasoning blend in an airtight glass jar in your pantry for up to 6 months. If you can't smell the seasoning anymore, it's time to replace it.

Healthy heart pro tip

While herbs and spices pack a nutritional punch, unless under the direction of a doctor, it's important to use them in normal, culinary amounts, and not in supplement or essential oil form. Some concentrated herb essential oils have been deemed toxic at high doses, and caution is advised (10). Additionally, some herbs may interact with warfarin (talk to your doctor).

FAQ

How can I use this to make ranch dip?

Make a ranch dip by adding 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons ranch seasoning to 1 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt. Taste and add more if desired. If it's too thick you can thin it out with a little milk or buttermilk. Regular plain nonfat yogurt will work as well.

How to make ranch dressing from ranch seasoning?

Combine 1 cup buttermilk, 1 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt, and 4 teaspoon ranch seasoning to make a delicious ranch dressing.

For a vegan option, combine 1 cup unsweetened soy milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and allow to sit for a few minutes. Then add 1 cup plain vegan yogurt and 4 teaspoon ranch seasoning.
