Heart Health Benefits of Dairy Free Ranch Dressing
Ranch dressing typically contains a whole host of ingredients that lead to it being high in calories, fat, and sodium. A two tablespoon serving can pack 120 calories or more, plus around 12 grams of fat! And those reduced fat or fat free versions kind of taste weird don't they?
Our ranch dressing version uses ingredients that are naturally creamy and low fat, with our own blend of low sodium ranch seasoning, to create a low calorie, low fat, low sodium dressing with the ranch flavor you love. Additionally, our ingredients support a healthy heart by helping to improve blood pressure and LDL profiles (1, 2), improve endothelial function, and reduce oxidative stress (3).
Macronutrients
Contrary to most ranch dressings, our version is low in total fat. It is also low in carbohydrates and protein. All this adds up to a low calorie dressing so you can pour on the flavor while spending those calories on other parts of your meal!
Micronutrients and Bioactive Components
Bioactive compounds are substances that have effects within the body that promote good health. Here are some of the most abundant bioactive compounds in Dairy Free Ranch Dressing:
- Soy protein and isoflavones - (in soy milk, if using) - associated with lower risk of coronary heart disease and overall cardiovascular disease (4);
- Allicin - (in ranch seasoning) organosulfur compound that, along with other garlic compounds, boasts antioxidant and antiplatelet effects. It may also improve oxidative stress and lower blood lipids (5, 6);
- Flavonoids and polyphenols - (in ranch seasoning) group of antioxidants and anti inflammatory agents that work together to lower cardiovascular risk (7, 8, 9);
- Beta glucans - (in ranch seasoning) a type of polysaccharide in some plant cell walls that has been shown to both lower cholesterol and improve blood sugar control (10, 11); and
- Carotenoids - (in ranch seasoning) a group of plant pigments that can help improve cardiovascular risk factors and increase circulating antioxidants (12).
Ingredients
Here is what you'll need for this recipe, along with some applicable substitutions and notes.

- Unsweetened nondairy milk - I'm using soy milk, but use what you like
- Plain nondairy yogurt - I'm using cashew yogurt, but soy yogurt would work, too
- Lemon juice - you could also use lime juice or white or apple cider vinegar
- Ranch seasoning
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
See how easy it is to make dairy free ranch dressing.

- Step 1: Combine the lemon juice and the nondairy milk. Stir and set aside for a few minutes.

- Step 2: Combine all the ingredients in a bowl.

- Step 3: Whisk to mix well. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Hint: a whisk works the best to thoroughly mix the dressing and avoid any lumps of yogurt or seasoning.
Variations
Try these variations to give your dressing more flare!
- Spicy - add chipotle or cayenne powder to the dressing, or a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce
- Ranch dip - to make ranch dip, simply use only ½ cup nondairy milk, and 1 ½ cups yogurt to make a thicker product. Adjust the proportions depending on how thick you like it.

Healthy heart pro tip
Keep your whole meal low sodium and heart healthy by being mindful of high sodium, high fat salad additions like preserved meats (ham, pepperoni, bacon, bologna, etc.), pickled items (pickles, olives, marinated mushrooms, pickled peppers, etc.), and cheese. Choose lean protein additions like dry beans/peas, tofu or tempeh, fish and other seafood, and skinless chicken.
FAQ
Yes, this dressing is oil free, in addition to being dairy free, low sodium, low fat, low calorie, and vegan.
Sure. Doing that may make your dressing higher in sodium, and probably not dairy free. Be sure to read labels to know what you're getting.
