When you’re choosing desserts, make sure you’re considering the amount of added sugar in the product. That’s the main thing to look for. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day for women, and no more than 9 teaspoons for men. And added sugar can take many names: sucrose, fructose, honey, maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, corn syrup, and cane sugar, just to name a few. While some may be more “natural” than others, they all are code for one thing: added sugar. Our heart healthy desserts all contain very low to no added sugars, typically opting instead to use whole fruit for sweetness when needed.
Another possible dessert pitfall is the amount of fat – usually saturated fat – in the item. Saturated fat can raise blood cholesterol in people who are sensitive to it. So all our desserts contain a healthier balance of fats.
Take a look around, and try some of these great heart healthy desserts for yourself!
