FAQs and Substitutions

What is matcha and where can I get it?

Matcha is simply specially grown green tea leaves, finely ground into a powder so it will dissolve in liquid. It does contain caffeine, so if you're sensitive to that, look for a decaf version (there aren't many, so check retailers like Amazon). Matcha powder can be found at most any major retailer like Target, Walmart, and Amazon, as well as smaller, local shops.

Is matcha healthy? Is matcha healthier than green tea?

If green tea is healthy, then matcha must be, too, right? Yep! In fact, since matcha is the whole tea leaf, it contains even more antioxidants than green tea does. In fact, it is considered the highest quality tea. It also has more caffeine than green tea, and in some cases, even more than coffee. It is widely known, however, to have a stimulating, yet calming effect to it, rather than the jittery feeling often associated with coffee consumption.

Match has also been studied for its effect on heart health. It has been found to inhibit stress activated signaling pathways, which can help reduce the inflammatory response (1). This could be particulary beneficial to those undergoing surgery who are susceptible to blood flow issues. Matcha may also help prevent cognitive decline that tends to come with age. This is probably due to a combination of caffeine and other antioxidants in the drink (as well as other beverages).

Do I have to use oatmilk?

In a word, no. Use whatever milk you want. I chose oatmilk for its creaminess, but use any other unsweetened, lowfat/fat free milk or milk alternative you like.

You might also like these beverages: Hibiscus Rose Cooler, Heart Healthy Whipped Coffee, Tropical Mango Lemonade, and Blackberry Mint Iced Tea.
