Heart Health Benefits of Mango Orange Smoothie
The thing we love most about this mango smoothie is just how great it is for our immune system! It's an excellent source of vitamin C, as well as high in fiber, vitamin A, calcium, and potassium.
Macronutrients
This recipe is moderate in both carbohydrates and protein, and high in fiber. The fruit we use contribute the majority of those carbohydrates and fiber. While fruit is high in naturally occurring sugar, it also comes packaged with tons of nutrition and fiber, so this isn't problematic for heart health - although people with diabetes may need to moderate their intake.
Orange mange smoothie also contains as much protein as an egg. A combination of this protein and the fiber will help you feel satisfied until lunch!
Micronutrients, Phytonutrients, and Antioxidants
Our smoothie contains high amounts of vitamin C, hesperidin, narirutin and naringin (from citrus fruits), all of which have important anti-inflammatory effects, supporting immune function, and reducing overall inflammation, including C-reactive protein (1). The bioactive compounds in citrus, like oranges, seems to also be protective against diabetes, high cholesterol, endothelial dysfunction, and atherosclerosis (2).
We know how important potassium is for heart health, so the fact that this smoothie is high in potassium is great for helping manage blood pressure and heart rhythm.
Mangiferin, an antioxidant from mangoes, is also present here, and possess antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiallergic, anticancer, and cholesterol lowering properties (3), as well as potentially being able to prevent heart failure (4) (effects have been observed in vitro and in mice so far - studies are ongoing).
Phenolic compounds gingerols, shogaols, and paradols (from ginger) add to the mix, lending their antimicrobial, anticancer, cardioprotective, antiobesity, and antidiabetic effects (5).
Finally, curcumin, a bioactive component of turmeric, can also play a role in the prevention of heart disease and type 2 diabetes (6).

Instructions
We love a recipe with this few steps!

- Step 1: Peel the oranges, making sure to remove as much of the pith (bitter white membrane) as you can.

- Step 2: Add all the ingredients to the blender.

- Step 3: Blend on high until it is very smooth.
Hint: using a high speed blender is best for this smoothie. If you don't have one, consider steaming the carrot first to soften it.
Substitutions
Smoothies are one of the most customizable foods out there. Here are some substitutions to consider:
- Oranges - use mandarins, tangerines, or even grapefruit instead
- Milk - any dairy or non dairy milk you like - just make sure it's unsweetened
- Mangoes - try either peaches or apricots. You may need to add some sweetener
- Ginger - leave it out, or try cinnamon or vanilla extract for added flavor
Equipment
A high speed blender, like Vitamix, is highly recommended for this recipe, to easily pulverize the carrot and ginger.
Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight vessel in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Pro tip
If you use fresh mango, you might want to also add 1 cup of ice for a nice cold smoothie.
FAQ
No you don't, but you can if you want to! I just scrub it well and cut off both ends before using in this smoothie.
I'm using navel oranges for this smoothie. Any variety should work for this recipe, as long as they are medium in size. If you get one of those extra large Costco-sized oranges, just use one.

I made it with plain Kefir and added half a banana for a little more sweetness. Yummy.
