Cinnamon sweet potato fries are oven baked, crispy, and pair nicely with burgers and slaw. A finishing dusting of cinnamon means you don't even need ketchup! But seriously, it's always on the table, right?

We know French fries aren't too healthy. And eating too much fried food can contribute to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. But it's so tasty! That's why I like to create recipes that are baked, instead of fried, but that are still crispy and delicious! Now, if you have an air fryer, you can easily make all manor of used-to-be fried food in it. But if you don't, this vegan sweet potato fries recipe is for you!

How to make healthy sweet potato fries in the oven

Making healthy sweet potato fries in the oven is really easy. But there's a secret ingredient to help them get nice and crispy, instead of limp and soggy. Corn starch!

That's right. After we cut the sweet potato in fry shape, we coat the pieces with corn starch! Why do we use corn starch in a sweet potato fries recipe? Well, corn starch is really good at absorbing moisture. And that's just the thing we need for crispy fries! Too much moisture will end in soggy fries.

So now that our fries are coated in cornstarch, we splash a little oil on them, and bake. We use a moderately high temperature to allow for a crunchy exterior and creamy soft inside.

For our recipe, once the fries are done baking, we then dust them with cinnamon. If we do that before baking, the cinnamon will burn, and I can tell you that will not be tasty!

What to pair with Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries

Some of my favorite things to pair with these sweet potato fries with cinnamon are:

  • Quinoa Mushroom Burgers with Black Beans
  • Red Cabbage Vinegar Slaw
  • Healthy Baked Beans
  • Sloppy Joes (try making it healthier with 50% beef and 50% lentils!)
  • Everything Bagel Chickpea Salad Sandwiches
  • Healthy Colcannon
  • Blackened Salmon

How to reheat sweet potato fries

There are two really great ways to reheat sweet potato fries.

The first way is in your oven. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Place your fries on a baking sheet, and bake them for about 10 minutes, keeping an eye on them so they don't burn.

The second way is to use a toaster oven, for which the directions are about the same. Bake them for about 10 minutes at 400 degrees F. Again, watch them so they don't burn.

I know neither of those are very immediate like a microwave would be. And you CAN use your microwave, but your sweet potato fries won't be crispy anymore.

If you try these cinnamon sweet potato fries, let me know in the comments!

Ingredients

  • 1 Large Sweet Potato (about 1-1 ½ lbs)
  • 2 tablespoon Corn Starch
  • 3 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • ½ tablespoon Cinnamon

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 400⁰ F.
  • Wash and dry sweet potato. Slice julienne style (I leave the skin on) in ¼ inch thick sticks. A mandolin with a fry attachment will help you get really uniform fries!
  • Toss sweet potato fries with corn starch.
  • Toss with oil to coat. Arrange in a single layer on a baking pan. Make sure to leave space around each fry (2 baking sheets may be needed).
  • Bake for 30 minutes, turning fries over halfway through.
  • Toss with cinnamon after the fries are done baking. Serve immediately.
